Recent developments on the overmolding process for the fabrication of thermoset and thermoplastic composites by the integration of nano/micron-scale reinforcements

Overmolding process is one of the growing advanced technologies for fabricating lightweight composite structures used in aerospace and automotive industries. This technology enables integrating multiple types reinforcements from macro- to nano-scale thermoplastic thermoset matrices assembling dissimilar polymeric materials. Besides, this well suited a digitalization manufacturing complex geometries with outstanding performance high adaptation multifunctionality. The present review aims cover recent developments design fabrication thermoset- thermoplastic-based systems via overmolding under (i) multi-material injection molding (ii) insert employment nano/micron-scale reinforcements. Multi-material (or over injection) investigated by considering two or more single mold obtain structural bonding quality. On other hand, evaluated through matrix reinforcement understand strength integrity during manufacturing. main bottleneck adhesion elaborated discussion distributive approaches offers new perspective producing multi-functional composites single-step tools.
